I’m about to travel to India, for a lost wax workshop, taking place at Creative Sculptors, Mahabalipuram, the ancient town situated in Kancheepuram district. A 7th century port city, 60 km south of Chennai.

Rigo was born and raised on the Portuguese island of Madeira. He later established himself as an artist in San Francisco, earning a BFA fromSan francisco Art Institute in 1991 and an MFA from Stanford University in 1997.From 1984 to 2002, Rigo used the last two digits of the current year as part of his name, finally settling upon "23" in 2003. These works shown at CCB were made with the help of Brazilian villagers.

Rigo nasceu e cresceu na ilha da Madeira. Mais tarde, estabelecendo-se como artista em San Francisco. Ganhou um BFA de San Francisco Art Institute em 1991 e um MFA da Universidade de Stanford em 1997.De 1984 a 2002, Rigo usou os dois últimos dígitos do ano em curso, como parte de seu nome, acabando finalmente por se decidir pelo "23" em 2003. The dolmen of Bobadela, a small town in the Estrela mountain area, central Portugal, is almost completely deprived of the slabs that originally covered the whole interior of the structure.

It’s composed of an artificial mound of gravel enclosing a polygonal chamber with eight upright stones and a long access corridor of seven meters in extent.

Built 6000 years ago only a few individuals were buried there at that time accompanied by an abundant and diverse range of lytic materials (arrowheads, blades, microlites, adzes, axes and necklace beads) as well as ceramics (about half hundred containers some of which decorated).

After a short period of use, perhaps of just a few decades it will have been closed but many hundreds of years later reused as evidenced by fragments of pottery and a smooth copper arrowhead.

O dólmen da Bobadela, um pequeno povoado na zona da Serra da Estrela, está quase completamente desprovido das lajes que originalmente cobriam todo o interior da estrutura.
É composto por uma colina artificial de cascalho encerrando uma câmara poligonal com oito pedras verticais e um longo corredor de acesso de sete metros de extensão.
Este monumento terá sido construído há 6000 anos e apenas alguns indivíduos enterrados ali acompanhados por uma gama abundante e diversificada de materiais líticos (pontas de seta, lâminas, micrólitos, enxós, machados e contas de colar), bem como cerâmica (cerca de meia centena de recipientes, alguns dos quais decorados).
Após um curto período de utilização, talvez de apenas algumas décadas, terá sido fechado, mas muitas centenas de anos mais tarde reutilizado como comprovam os fragmentos de cerâmica e uma ponta de seta em cobre.

In continuation of my work on the human condition, I chose the heart, an organ of the body that has the highest importance and a magnetic field larger than the brain, to represent Man in the world.
The heart has in Humankind’s various cultures, many symbolisms: motor to pump blood, in the mechanistic views of the body but also love, courage, emotion, compassion, strength. It stands for life and the life forces that govern us.
The Titans are primitive deities, perhaps of remote eastern origin, linked to agrarian rites, connected with the elements of nature. Greek mythology attributes to titans the origin of the terrestrial part, or material dimension of human beings.
The Titans were the 12 sons of the early masters of the universe, Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Heaven) and gave rise to the familiar gods of Olympus.
They are the representation of what is most essential in us and in nature, to which we belong. This Titan’s heart embodies all the efforts and difficulties of survival, from ancient times till today. I propose that a great heart is the answer to the challenges that today are put before mankind.

Na continuação do meu trabalho sobre a condição humana, escolhi o coração, órgão do corpo que tem a maior importância e um campo magnético maior que o cérebro, para representar o Homem no mundo.

O coração tem na cultura da humanidade vários simbolismos: motor de bombear sangue, nas visões mecanicistas do corpo mas também, amor, coragem, emoção, compaixão, força. É sinónimo de vida e das forças vitais que nos regem.
Ora, os titãs, são divindades primitivas, talvez de remota origem oriental, ligadas a ritos agrários, estão conotados com os elementos da natureza. A mitologia Grega atribui aos titãs a origem da parte terrestre, ou material, dos seres humanos.
Os titãs eram os 12 filhos dos primitivos senhores do universo, Gaia (a Terra) e Úrano (o Céu) e deram origem aos conhecidos deuses do Olimpo.
São a representação do que há de mais essencial em nós e na natureza à qual pertencemos.
Este coração de Titã, incorpora todos os esforços e dificuldades de sobrevivência, desde tempos remotos até aos nossos dias. Eu proponho que um coração enorme é a resposta para enfrentar os desafios que hoje se colocam perante a humanidade.

You may have noticed that I’ve been working on the concept of the heart as a representation of the human condition in its various forms, in my view what could be more appropriate?

I had this big red rock and made plans to make a heart and call it Titan’s heart but I decided to make some smaller versions first with the same type of stone and on wood, then I got an invitation to make something for the Public Art exhibition that takes place every year in Sintra, since the work must have appropriate dimensions to be on the street I thought the time was right to go for it.

Heart and kidneys and other internal organs are disgusting. The common person flinches at their sight. This has always intrigued me and I’ve often wondered why do we feel so repulsed by the organs that are vital to our existence? Is it because we can’t stand to look at our inner selves? Is it, that an organ exposed like that equals death? Is it that animal’s organs look exactly like ours? What is it that viscera remind us of? Is it just a question of habit? Or is there a more deep rooted psychological reason for this? I propose that the answer lies in our estrangement from nature and in our refusal to look at ourselves as part of it. We don’t like to be confronted with death; we don’t like to think animals are just like us on the inside, we don’t like to think of how fragile our existence is.
This body of work, that is just beginning, intends to further explore these questions, exposing to plane view the more cumbersome bowels.

Coração e rins e outros órgãos internos causam repulsa. A pessoa comum recua à sua vista. Desde sempre intrigada por isto, pergunto-me porque nos sentimos tão repelidos pelos órgãos que são vitais para nossa existência? Será porque não suportamos olhar para o nosso interior? Será porque um órgão exposto é igual a morte? Será porque os órgãos dos animais são exactamente como os nossos? O que é que nos fazem lembrar as vísceras? É apenas uma questão de hábito? Ou há uma, mais profunda, raiz psicológica para isto? Proponho que a resposta está no nosso distanciamento da natureza e na nossa recusa em olhar para nós mesmos como parte dela. Não gostamos de ser confrontados com a morte, não gostamos de pensar que os animais são como nós por dentro, não gostamos de pensar quão frágil é a nossa existência.

Este conjunto de trabalhos, que agora começa, pretende continuar a explorar estas questões e expor à vista as entranhas mais incómodas.

(PhysOrg.com) -- Elvira Fortunato and colleagues from the Centro de Investigação de Materiais (Cenimat/I3N), at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, made the first Field Effect Transistor (FET) with a paper "interstrate" layer.

A new device which rivals in electrical performance with the actual state of the art of oxide based thin film transistors (TFTs) produced on glass or crystalline silicon substrates. These results will be published next September in IEEE Electron Device Letters.
Nowadays, there is an increased interest in the use of biopolymers for low-cost electronic applications. Since cellulose is the Earth’s major biopolymer, some international teams have reported using paper as the physical support (substrate) of electronic devices. But, until now, no one had used paper as an interstrate component of a FET.
In a new approach, scientists from Cenimat/I3N – a research group coordinated by Elvira Fortunato and Rodrigo Martins – used a common sheet of paper as the dielectric layer on oxide FETs.
The research team fabricated the devices on both sides of the paper sheet. This way, the paper acts simultaneously as the electric insulator and as the substrate. "It's a two in one," says Elvira Fortunato.
Furthermore, electric characterization of devices showed that the hybrid FETs’ performance outpace those of amorphous silicon TFTs, and rival with the actual state of the art of oxide thin film transistors.
These results suggest promising new disposable electronics devices, like paper displays, smart labels, smart packaging, bio-applications, RFID tags, among others.

Hoje foi dia de colocar a nova cabeça da escultura Belua. Com a ajuda de dois homens dos serviços municipalizados de Sintra e a grua de um camião do lixo (sim, do lixo), correu tudo sem incidentes e lá ficou de novo mas desta vez mais agarrada, para divertimento dos turistas.

O gang das cabeças voltou a atacar.
Parece que alguém anda a fazer colecção de cabeças das minhas peças mas sem pagar e sem o devido respeito pelo trabalho e pela artista. Faz-me confusão que existam pessoas capazes de actos tão gratuitos como este. Quanto é que pode render a venda de uma cabeça de mármore não assinada e sem o resto da peça? Seja como for sou duplamente lesada, moral e materialmente. A seu tempo serão responsabilizados pelos seus actos.Os actos ficam com quem os pratica.
