The next day, after the metal has cooled off during the night, it’s time to release the pieces.

The shell is hammered away, releasing the rough casting. The sprues, which are also faithfully recreated in metal, are cut off, to be reused in another casting.

No dia seguinte, depois do metal arrefecer durante a noite, está na altura de liberar as peças.
A concha é retirada com o martelo, liberando o metal áspero. Os gitos, que também foram fielmente recriados em metal, são cortados, para serem reutilizados numa outra fundição.

Somu's Puja - ritual casting

Bronze casting at Somu’s foundry.

Somu is a young man. He’s a Bachelor of Visual Arts - Metal Sculpture from the local Art school, where his own father taught.

Somu learned is trade from his father who learned from his grandfather and so on for generations, that casting is a sacred moment, therefore a Puja or prayer is necessary always be it a big or small amount of metal.

Ganesh, god wisdom and destroyer of obstacles and Kali the goddess of fire have to be honoured before the furnace is lit, at the end of the process offerings will be made to make sure everything will turn out well.

The casting area is also sacred ground and you can only enter barefoot, which in a way explains the lack of protection. The gods are seeing that no one gets hurt. 
They live by grace.

Somu é um jovem. É Bacharel em Artes Visuais - Escultura em metal, pela Escola de Arte local, onde seu pai ensinou.
Somu, aprendeu a profissão com o pai que aprendeu com o avô e assim há gerações, que a fundição é um momento sagrado, portanto, uma Puja ou oração é sempre necessária, haja uma quantidade grande ou pequena de metal para vazar.

The first time I witnessed a casting, in India, I had a chock, the workers wear no protection what so ever. Anyone who knows a bit about the process is aware of the temperatures and the danger of being close to the furnace and the melting pot. They seem to do it with great ease and no worries in that respect.

A primeira vez que assisti a uma fundição na Índia, tive um choque, os trabalhadores não usam nenhuma protecção . Qualquer um que conheça um pouco do processo tem noção das temperaturas e do perigo de estar perto da fornalha e do cadinho. Eles parecem fazê-lo com grande facilidade e sem preocupações a esse respeito.

The hardened shells are ready to use but they still have to be covered with refractory paste then placed cup-upwards and buried into the ground to keep them steady for the pouring.

 As conchas endurecidas estão prontas para usar, 
mas ainda têm que ser cobertas com pasta refractária, e em seguida, colocadas de boca para cima e enterradas no chão para as manter estáveis para o vazamento.

Here in this part of India, Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu, the waxes are covered with a mix of plaster and brick powder or as Somu does it with plaster and sand. These shells around the wax are then heated upside down until the wax melts and runs out into a pot, the melted wax can be recovered and reused.

All that remains of the original artwork is the negative space, formerly occupied by the wax, inside the hardened shell.

Aqui nesta parte da Índia, Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu, as ceras são cobertas com uma mistura de gesso e pó de tijolo ou como Somu faz com gesso e areia. Estes invólucros da cera são, então, aquecidos com a abertura para baixo até que a cera derrete e corre para um recipiente, a cera derretida pode ser recuperada e reutilizada.
Tudo o que resta da obra de arte original é o espaço negativo, anteriormente ocupado pela cera, dentro da casca endurecida.

While the leaf and ants are being done at "Creative Sculptors" I decided to cast one of my hearts at this small, very familiar foundry, owned by Somu. This Foundry has been in is family for generations. Somu works mainly for the temples.

Enquanto a folha e as formigas estão a ser feitas na " Creative Sculptors", decidi fundir um dos meus corações nesta pequena fundição, muito familiar, da propriedade de Somu. Esta fundição é da família dele há gerações. Somu, trabalha essencialmente para os templos.

The wax copy is sprued with a treelike structure of wax that will provide paths for molten casting metal to flow and air to escape. The carefully planned spruing usually begins at the top with a wax "cup," which is attached by wax cylinders to various points on the wax copy. This spruing doesn't have to be hollow, as it will be melted out later in the process.

 Á volta da cópia de cera é criada uma estrutura ramificada de cera para proporcionar caminhos para o metal fundido e para o fluxo de ar se escapar. Esta fase é cuidadosamente planeada e geralmente começa na parte superior com um "copo", que está ligado por cilindros de cera a vários pontos da cópia de cera. 1st day of work

If you follow this blog, you know I went to India to work with lost wax bronze casting.
I started by making a leaf that will be held by 5 ants. 

The lost wax technique involves creating a wax original that will be covered at a later stage.
I like to work directly with the wax to make the original. Of course that means I can’t make multiples and I run the risk of losing everything if anything goes wrong.

This is Raj, helping me prepare the wax.

 

Se é seguidor deste blog, sabe que fui à Índia para trabalhar com fundição de bronze em cera perdida.

 
Comecei por fazer uma folha que será sustentada por 5 formigas.  

A técnica de cera perdida envolve a criação de um original de cera que será coberto numa fase posterior.
Gosto de trabalhar directamente com a cera para fazer o original, claro que isso significa que não posso fazer múltiplos e corro o risco de perder tudo se algo correr mal.

I Love India

I’m  back

What a wonderful experience it was to be in India,

I don’t know where to start. From the richness of the place itself, the temples everywhere, the colours, the light, nature, to the people, some of the kindest people I’ve ever met in my entire life, the whole journey was something I’ll never forget. Very intense! I lack the words to describe it. It’s something one has to experience personally.

Here are some of the photos I took when I first arrived.

Estou de volta

Que experiência maravilhosa foi estar na Índia,

não sei por onde começar.

Se pela riqueza do próprio local: templos em toda parte, as cores, a luz, a natureza. Se pelas pessoas: algumas das pessoas mais amáveis ​​que conheci em toda a minha vida.

Foi uma viagem que nunca esquecerei. Muito intensa! Faltam-me as palavras para descrevê-la.

É algo que se tem de experimentar pessoalmente.
