For this exhibition, Luis Filipe Gomes and I worked together on the concepts of sacred / profane in Ex vote and Reliquary format. This is the text we wrote:
Sacred profane
Sacred, from the Latin "sacratu" refers to something that deserves reverence
or respect for religious association with a deity or with objects regarded as
divine.
In particular, the manifestation of the sacred, can be materialized as a
mountain, be recognized in a clean water source, a colossal stone, an ancient
tree or an unusual object, natural or manufactured, generally perceived by a
prophetic interpreter that reveals the thing or object and detaches it of the
material sphere, transposing it to a sacred one.
In the sacralised archaic world, the understanding of the material and
spiritual phenomena tended to create a dichotomy between the sacred and the
profane.
According to the changes in the ruling power’s way of thinking, the profane
could become sacred and the sacred could be unsacred. The archaic polytheistic
sacredness, expressed in many gods and the diversification and expansion of
secular and scientific knowledge, curiously, were parallel but in reverse
direction, the more areas of knowledge, the less specific gods, culminating a
single god and finally even in the abolition of God. Decreed his death and
confirmed his obsolescence, materialism, took his place.
The world today is desecrated and religiosity exists more out of habit or for
power convenience than for spiritual need. That misconception and that lack of
need only fall apart in extreme situations of suffering or imminent death.
It is then that each one is reunited with the God of his needs and finds what
some call mystery, others faith and others don't even name.
This exhibition reflects on the lack of sacredness and questions which values
to preserve for the future, be they religious, ethical or simply of an intimate
nature.
While interpreters of the value of the ephemeral, observers of the time we live
in, we feel the need to reveal objects, memories, emotions, with the respect
dedicated to that which is sacred.

em formato Ex voto e Relicário. Este é o texto que escrevemos:
Sagrado
profano
Sagrado, do latim
“sacratu”, refere-se a algo que merece veneração ou respeito religioso por ter
uma associação com uma divindade ou com objetos considerados divinos.
Concretamente,
a manifestação do sagrado, pode ser materializada numa montanha, ser
reconhecida numa nascente de água limpa, numa pedra colossal, numa árvore
centenária ou num objecto invulgar, natural ou manufacturado, geralmente
percebida por um intérprete profético que revela a coisa ou objecto e o destaca
do espaço material, transpondo-a para o espaço sagrado.
No mundo
arcaico, sacralizado, o entendimento dos fenómenos materiais e espirituais
tendia a criar uma dicotomia entre o sagrado e o profano.
Consoante
a alteração da maneira de pensar do poder dominante, o profano podia tornar-se
sagrado e o sagrado podia ser desconsagrado. A sacralidade arcaica politeísta, expressada
em muitos deuses e a diversificação e a expansão do conhecimento secular e científico,
curiosamente, foram paralelos mas em sentido inverso. Quanto mais áreas de
conhecimento, menos deuses específicos, culminado no deus único e por fim, até na
abolição de Deus. Decretada a sua morte e confirmada a sua obsolescência, o
materialismo, tomou o seu lugar.
O mundo
actual está dessacralizado e a religiosidade quando existe mantém-se mais por hábito
ou por conveniência de poder do que por necessidade espiritual. Esse equívoco e
essa ausência de necessidade só se desfazem em situações limite de sofrimento
ou de morte eminente.
É então
que cada um se reencontra com o deus da sua necessidade e descobre o que uns
chamam mistério, outros, fé e outros não nomeiam.
A exposição presente é uma reflexão sobre essa
ausência de sacralidade e questiona que valores preservar para o tempo futuro,
sejam eles religiosos, éticos ou simplesmente do foro íntimo.
Enquanto intérpretes do valor do que é
efémero, observadores do momento em que vivemos, sentimos a necessidade de revelar,
objectos, memórias, emoções, com o respeito que se dedica ao que é sagrado.
