Etching | Água forte

This step on the engraving process is called etching. It consists of applying a varnish to the surface of a copper plate so a drawing can be scratched on it, exposing the metal. The copper plate will then be immersed it in an acid solution. The acid will corrode the areas exposed, leaving the ones covered with the varnish intact. |
Este passo da gravação chama-se Água forte. Consiste em aplicar um verniz sobre a chapa de cobre para depois riscar um desenho, expondo o metal. A chapa é depois mergulhada em acido. Tudo o que não estiver coberto com o verniz é atacado pelo acido, formando o desenho.

Woodcut | Xilogravura

Woodcuts are relief prints. The design is drawn on the surface of a wooden block or plank. The areas that are to be blank are cut away; leaving raised the design that is to be printed. Ink is then rolled or daubed over the raised area. A sheet of paper is placed on top of the block and pressed against it, either in a press or by hand. This pressure transfers the ink to the paper. Since the print is the mirror image of the design on the block, the image must be conceived in reverse.
Xilogravuras são impressões em relevo. O desenho é criado na superfície de um bloco de madeira ou prancha. As áreas que ficarão em branco são cortadas; deixando mais alto o desenho que será imprimido. A tinta é então passada com um rolo sobre a área levantada. Uma folha de papel é colocada em cima do bloco e pressionada numa prensa ou à mão. Esta pressão transfere a tinta para o papel. Considerando que a impressão é a imagem de espelho do desenho no bloco, a imagem deve ser concebida ao contrário.
